At each rehearsal, write out your blocking in pencil in your script, write out any notes given and how you addressed each note. Keep this actor diary because you will be required to hand this in on November 10. Even though there are due dates along the way which must be honored you will be required to hand in everything again on November 10.

PRE-REHEARSAL: MINING THE TEXT
On the front page of your script write: In your Rehearsal Journal:

• The event of the play * Do givens for your actor
• Your character’s objective * Research historical context for your character
• Your character’s obstacle * Write a brief synopsis of that historical context

In Your script:
• Write out tactics for each beat
DUE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

WEEK ONE: MOVEMENT AND VOICE:
Choose a method by which to explore your character’s movement. Look carefully at the age, vocation, repetitive motion and personal tension. Let your characters status and situation inform how ingrained the tension is in each muscle group.

Choose a voice for your character based on status, age and education.
Write out the dialect in your script.

In your Rehearsal Journal:
• Write journal entries for each level of exploration.

DUE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

WEEK TWO: BUILDING THE LIFE OF THE CHARACTER 1
In your Rehearsal Journal:
• Write a brief description the relationships your character has in the play. Make sure to start with the background before the play begins and build on the conflict within each scene.
• Write out the moment before.
• Write out the moment after.

DUE TUESDAY, SPETEMBER 29

WEEK THREE: BUILDING THE LIFE OF THE CHARACTER 2
Find an inspiration for your character, something that defines them and their plight. It can be a monologue, a painting, a song, an advertisement. Bring it in a form that can be put into your dressing room area.

In your Rehearsal Journal:
• Write what you have chosen and why.

DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 5

WEEK FOUR: CREATING THE REALITY OF THE TIME PERIOD:
In your Rehearsal Journal:
• Write a letter to someone significant to your character about this time period.
• Draw a picture of your bedroom – the space you think of as only yours.
• Write a journal about what each day looks like for your character.
• Write a journal how this day is different than all others for your character.
DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 12

WEEK FIVE: MEMORIZATION

Make sure you have carefully reviewed all of your dialect/character voice notes and put any necessary changes into your script. Have your lines down cold by Sunday, October 18, 2009
DUE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18

WEEK SIX: REASSESSING YOUR CHOICES:
Review all of your text work. Change any choices that no longer work. Put all of the changes in your script.
In your Rehearsal Journal:
• Evaluate your first run through—what worked, what did not work.
• Write out a detailed prescription for fixing those moments that did not work. Follow through on that prescription and keep an account of how well that worked.
Write out all notes given and how you addressed each note.
DUE: MONDAY, OCTOBER 26.

WEEK SEVEN: TRANSFORMING THE THEATER

• Make a list of all the props you use in the show, where you pick them up and where you place them after you get off stage. Write a brief description of the significance of each prop.

• Make a list of all your costume pieces, listing in which scenes you wear them. Write a brief description of the significance of each piece of clothing you wear.
DUE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2

WEEK EIGHT: CHARACTER DIARY:
In your Rehearsal Journal:
Write an in-depth diary entry as your character. Describe the day in which the play takes place. Note: The play takes place over a 24-hour span of time. Through the rest of the week, keep track in your journal of any choices (tactics/objectives/etc.) that you have altered

Before each rehearsal/performance, write out:
• What you plan to work on that evening

After each rehearsal/performance, write out:
• How you achieved the goal that you set for yourself and what you learned from that goal
• How each dress/performance was different
• How the audience affected you and your choices
• How you will use that information

EVALUATION:

1. How would you approach this role differently next time?
2. What might you have incorporated earlier on?
3. What do you wish you had known earlier?
4. How was your level of commitment?
5. How willing were you to take risk?
6. How well did you do all of the out-of-rehearsal work?
7. How complete is your Performance Journal?
8. How did you grow as an actor?

Hand in your entire Rehearsal Journal, including all entries, all notes and any additions research/inspiration.
